Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay Foundation
The Foundation's third fund raising campaign for the research project on the Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay is now underway. As a result of all your efforts, a team of researchers, led by Dr. Bernard Brais, is actively working on the research project. At the end of the second year of existence, it is timely to review what has been accomplished.
The Foundation is proud of the achievements in 2008:
$ 673 000 in donations including a grant of $108 000 from the Canadian Institute of Health Research
the recognition of the project by the Canadian Institute of Health Canada;
the creation of an international network of research on genes in partnership with McGill University;
the quality of the team members. Indeed, the team continues to grow. Drs McPherson and Gering joined the research team.
For 2008-2009, the Foundation has ambitious goals for its research project:
create the first transgenic mice with the inactivated gene SACS (knock-out mice);
complete the conception and injections needed to produce a transgenic mouse with a gene SACS with a human mutation;
publish the first study that provides a description of protein integrators of the sacsin protein;
publish an article on more than ten new mutations identified in the cases of ARSAC in Quebec;
finalize the development of a technology that will help in reaching a genetic diagnosis in patients around the world quickly and at low cost.
To achieve these objectives, we need your support. With your contribution, the research project will continue to make great strides.
Thank you for your support and generosity.
